Pythagorean Gematria vs Modern Numerology
The same reduction to a single digit underlies both, but the claims attached to it are very different, and the name attached to it is questionable.
The Cipher
Pythagorean reduction collapses each letter to a digit from 1 to 9. A through I are 1 to 9, J restarts at 1 through R at 9, and S through Z run 1 to 8. Add the letters, then reduce the total until one digit remains.

The Attribution Problem
Pythagoras and his followers did hold that number was fundamental to reality, and Greek number theory owes them a great deal. But this specific cipher applies to the Latin alphabet, which the Pythagoreans did not use, and the mapping is a twentieth century construction. The name is an appeal to authority rather than a lineage.
Greeks who wanted to treat words as numbers had isopsephy, which used their own numerals and produced entirely different values. That is the actual Greek tradition, and it is documented.
Where the Numerology Comes In
Modern name numerology uses this reduction and then attaches meanings to each of the nine digits: 1 for leadership, 2 for cooperation, and so on. The arithmetic is not in dispute. What is worth being clear about is that the meanings are a modern system, developed largely in the early twentieth century, and are not inherited from any classical source.
