Gematria Calculator
Type a word, a name or a whole verse. Every Hebrew, English and Greek cipher is calculated at once, and every card opens to show the arithmetic letter by letter. Free, instant, nothing leaves your browser.
How the Calculation Works
Every gematria system is the same three steps wearing different clothes. First a cipher assigns a number to each letter of the alphabet. Then the letters of your word are looked up and added together. Finally the total is often reduced to a single digit by adding its digits repeatedly.
Take LOVE in English Ordinal: L=12, O=15, V=22, E=5. Added together that is 54, and 5+4 reduces to 9. Switch to English Reverse and the same four letters become 15+12+5+22 = 54 as well, which is a coincidence worth noticing rather than a rule. Switch to Pythagorean reduction and you get 3+6+4+5 = 18, reducing to 9 again.
The Hebrew tradition works the same way but the ladder is older: the first nine letters count 1 to 9, the next nine count 10 to 90, and the last four count 100 to 400. Greek isopsephy uses an almost identical ladder, which is why alpha is 1 and rho is 100.
The Systems This Calculator Covers
English Ordinal
A=1 to Z=26. The default English cipher and the one most people mean by "English gematria".
English Reverse
The alphabet read backwards, A=26 down to Z=1.
Pythagorean
Full reduction: every letter collapsed to a single digit 1 to 9. The basis of modern name numerology.
Sumerian
English Ordinal multiplied by six, so A=6 and Z=156.
Jewish Gematria
Latin letters mapped onto the Hebrew 1-9, 10-90, 100-900 ladder.
Mispar Hechrachi
The standard Hebrew values, where final letters keep their base number.
Mispar Gadol
The same, except the five final letters run 500 to 900.
Greek Isopsephy
The Milesian numerals used across the Hellenistic world, alpha=1 to sampi=900.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is gematria?
Gematria assigns a number to each letter of an alphabet and adds those numbers to give a word a numeric value. It began in Hebrew scriptural study and has close parallels in Greek isopsephy and in the modern English ciphers.
Why does one word have several different values?
Because each cipher numbers the letters differently. English Ordinal counts A as 1, English Reverse counts A as 26, and Jewish Gematria maps A onto the Hebrew ladder. Each value is correct inside its own system, which is why this calculator shows them side by side instead of picking one for you.
What is Mispar Gadol?
It is the Hebrew method in which the five final letters (kaf, mem, nun, pe and tsadi sofit) take the values 500 to 900 rather than repeating the value of their normal form. Most classical texts use the standard method, but Gadol shows up often enough that it is worth checking both.
Do vowels, spaces and punctuation count?
Spaces, digits and punctuation are ignored. Hebrew vowel points and Greek accents are stripped before calculating, so only the letters themselves are counted.
What is the reduced value?
It is the digital root. The digits of the total are added repeatedly until a single digit remains: 137 becomes 1+3+7=11, then 1+1=2.
Is there an app to install?
No. This is an online gematria decoder that runs entirely in the page, so there is nothing to download and no account to create. Once loaded it keeps working offline, and you can add it to your home screen if you want it a tap away.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The whole calculation runs in your browser. There is no account, no logging of what you type, and the page works offline once it has loaded.
