Date and Birthday Calculator
Pick a date to see its digit sum, its reduced value, and the same day in the Hebrew calendar written out in Hebrew letters. Every step of the arithmetic is shown.
Say Plainly What This Is
A date has no gematria. Gematria assigns numbers to letters, and a date is already digits, so there is nothing to convert. What every date calculator actually does, including this one, is add the digits and reduce them, which is numerology.
That is worth stating because the two get merged constantly, and the merge is what makes date results feel more authoritative than they are. The arithmetic here is exact. It simply is not the same practice as valuing a Hebrew word, and no classical source treats dates this way.
How the Reduction Works
Take 4 September 2026. Written as digits that is 2 0 2 6 0 9 0 4, and adding them gives 23. Reducing further, 2 + 3 = 5. That single digit is the digital root, the same operation used for reduced letter values in Mispar Katan and Pythagorean reduction.
The short form drops the century and the leading zeros, giving 4 + 9 + 2 + 6 = 21, which reduces to 3. Both are shown above, because sources disagree about which to use and a figure you cannot reproduce is not worth much.
Why Calculators Disagree About Dates
Four choices, none of them settled, and each changes the total.
Year Length
Two digit or four digit. 2026 contributes 10; 26 contributes 8.
Leading Zeros
Zero adds nothing to a sum, but it changes whether a digit is counted at all in some methods.
Date Order
Day-month or month-day does not change a digit sum, but it does change results in methods that treat the parts separately.
Reduce When
Reducing each part first and then adding usually, but not always, matches reducing at the end.
If you are comparing dates, fix one method and use it throughout. If you are checking a published figure, the reduced digit is the most likely to match, because reduction absorbs many of these differences.
The Hebrew Calendar Date
This is the part that is genuinely about Hebrew rather than about digit sums. The tool converts your date to the Hebrew calendar and writes the day and year in Hebrew letters, using the same values covered on the Hebrew letter values page.
Two things to know when reading it. The Hebrew day begins at sunset, so an evening event falls on the following Hebrew date, and this conversion assumes the daytime date. And years are conventionally written without the thousands digit, so 5786 appears as the last three letters, with the full form given alongside.
This is also where the fifteenth of a month looks unusual: it is written 9+6 rather than 10+5, because the ordinary spelling would reproduce part of the divine name.
What the Number Supports
Very little, and it is better to be direct about that. Reducing to a single digit puts every date into one of nine groups, which means roughly a ninth of all birthdays share yours. Any description that seems to fit is fitting hundreds of millions of people equally well.
The Hebrew date, by contrast, is a fact: it is the actual day in a calendar still in use, and it is what you would need for an anniversary or a yahrzeit. If one thing on this page is worth writing down, it is that.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gematria of a date?
Strictly there is none, because gematria works on letters and a date is digits. What people mean is the digit sum: adding the digits of the date and reducing them to one, which is numerology rather than gematria.
How do you calculate your birthday number?
Add every digit of the date, then keep adding the digits of the result until one remains. 4 September 2026 gives 2+0+2+6+0+9+0+4 = 23, and 2+3 = 5.
Why do some calculators give a different number?
Because they use a different form of the date. A two digit year, a day-month order, or dropping leading zeros all change the total. The reduced single digit is often the same, but not always.
What is the Hebrew date shown here?
The same day in the Hebrew calendar, converted by your browser, with the day and year also written in Hebrew letters. Note that the Hebrew day changes at sunset rather than midnight.
Does a date's number mean anything?
The arithmetic is exact but very coarse. Reducing to one digit sorts every date into nine groups, so any meaning attached applies to a ninth of all dates at once.
