What Simple Gematria Actually Means

The method is the easiest in the subject. The name is one of the most ambiguous, because two unrelated ciphers are both called simple.

The Usual Meaning

Nine times out of ten, simple gematria means English Ordinal: A is 1, B is 2, and so on to Z at 26. Add the letters, and that is the total. It is called simple because there is nothing to learn beyond the alphabet you already know, and because you can check any result on your fingers.

PEACE is 16 + 5 + 1 + 3 + 5 = 30. TRUTH is 20 + 18 + 21 + 20 + 8 = 87. No cipher table, no lookup, no ambiguity about the arithmetic.

The Other Meaning

In Hebrew contexts, simple sometimes translates Mispar Katan, the reduced method, where every letter is collapsed to a single digit so that 300 becomes 3 and 40 becomes 4. This is a completely different operation from English Ordinal, and it produces small numbers for words whose standard value runs into the hundreds.

Confusing the two is common and produces exactly the kind of unreproducible figure that makes people distrust the subject. If a source says simple gematria and is working in Hebrew, assume reduced values until shown otherwise. If it is working in English, assume Ordinal.

Why the Simple Version Is the One to Start With

Three reasons, and none of them is that it is more authentic. English Ordinal has no more historical standing than the other English ciphers.

First, it is checkable. Anyone can verify your total in under a minute without a table, which means a disagreement is settled rather than argued. Second, it is the default. An unlabelled English gematria figure is more likely to be Ordinal than anything else, so if you are trying to reproduce someone else's number, start here. Third, it has the tightest range, which is useful to know when judging a claim: a five letter word can only fall between 5 and 130, and in practice almost always between 40 and 80.

What Simple Gematria Is Not

It is not a simplified version of Hebrew gematria. The two systems share an idea, not a lineage. Hebrew values run 1 to 9, then 10 to 90, then 100 to 400, an architecture inherited from the Phoenician alphabet in which the letters genuinely were the numerals. English letters were never numerals, so A equals 1 is a modern convention rather than a survival.

It is also not more or less correct than Reverse Ordinal or Pythagorean. Each cipher is internally consistent. What matters is not choosing the right one but staying inside whichever one you chose, and saying which it was.

A Quick Check on Any Simple Total

The whole alphabet in Ordinal sums to 351. A word cannot exceed 26 times its letter count, so a four letter word cannot pass 104. Repeated letters are the usual source of error, because the eye skips them: count the letters first, then check that your sum has that many terms.

If a published simple gematria figure fails one of those tests, the cipher is not what you were told it was. Divide by six to test for Sumerian, or compare against 27 times the letter count minus the total to test for Reverse.
